Responsible Outdoor Lighting At Night
With the aim of creating a more sustainable, healthier, and safer future; some of the lighting industries most prominent organisations have come together to initiate change in the lighting community. The Responsible Outdoor Lighting At Night (ROLAN) Manifesto sets out to define the principles of outdoor lighting design that will help deliver a brighter future for all (pun intended!). Expanding on from the IDA-IES five principles for responsible outdoor lighting; the manifesto proposes principles that can directly support change, specifically referencing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This is an important reference as the SDGs do not explicitly refer to external illumination. It is therefore important to acknowledge the role that external lighting has within the SDGs, and provide guidance to how lighting designers can help support these goals.
The manifesto is a collaboration between the ILLUME research group/the Gdansk University of Technology, and the International Dark‐Sky Association; with contributions and support from further Founding Partners: the Society of Light and Lighting (SLL), the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) and the Lighting Industry Association (LIA).
These are some of the most influential organisations within the lighting design industry, and provides a clear acknowledgement of the need for change within the way we think about external illumination.
